iPhone 16 battery: The biggest changes

iPhone 16 battery: The biggest changes

With the introduction of the iPhone 16 series, there are several changes and improvements in charging options that you as a repair store should not miss. From faster wired charging speeds to improved MagSafe performance, the iPhone 16 presents new opportunities for accessories and chargers. In this blog, we discuss the differences in battery capacity between previous iPhone models and the iPhone 16, and how you can offer solutions to your customers with the right charging accessories.

Longer battery life

Apple would use TSMC's advanced 3nm technology for the Apple A18 and A18 Pro chipsets. These new processors are said to be more energy efficient than the chips in the iPhone 15 series, providing longer battery life. Another interesting rumor says Apple has redesigned the iPhone batteries and is now putting them in metal housings to better dissipate heat and that the shape of the batteries has been modified to store more energy.

Even faster charging with iPhone 16

Difference between iPhone 15 and iPhone 16

Switching to USB-C with the iPhone 15 series, the iPhone 16 series continues to use USB-C ports and supports USB Power Delivery (PD) for fast wired charging. For the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, charging speeds remain similar to previous models. With a USB-C-adapter of at least 20W it is possible to charge the iPhone 16 to 30% in about 50 minutes.

Faster charging with iPhone 16 Pro models

The iPhone 16 Pro models go a step further with support for wired charging up to 40W. This allows an iPhone 16 Pro to charge from 0% to 50% in just over 15 minutes. For this higher charging speed, is a USB-C-power adapter of at least 40W and a USB-C cable required.

Increased MagSafe charging speed with iPhone 16 series

MagSafe has played an important role in wireless charging since the iPhone 12 series, and it will continue to do so for the iPhone 16 series. The iPhone 16 supports both Qi and MagSafe technologies for wireless charging.

With the iPhone 16 series, charging speed via MagSafe is expected to increase from 15W to 20W. Don't worry though; the current 15W MagSafe chargers will just remain compatible with the iPhone 16 models. It's wise to offer several wireless chargers so your customers can choose from a variety of options.

Battery-upgrades iPhone 16

The iPhone 16 batteries are getting an upgrade on the previous models. It looks like the 16 Pro model will get the biggest upgrade. In fact, the current 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro comes with a 3.274 mAh battery, while the new and larger 6.3-inch iPhone 16 Pro now appears to be getting a 3.577 mAh battery. That's an upgrade of a whopping 9%.

The new iPhone 16 Pro Max model is expected to come with a 4,676 mAh battery, a nearly 6% increase over the current 15 Pro Max battery.

The iPhone 16 battery will feature 3,561 mAh, which is a 6.3% advance compared to the iPhone 15's 3,349 mAh battery. And the iPhone 16 Plus battery with 4,006 mAh seems oddly off by 8.6% when compared to the iPhone 15 Plus 4,383 mAh battery.

Conclusion

The iPhone 16 series introduces significant improvements in battery technology and charging speed. The iPhone 16 Pro models now offer faster 40W wired charging and an improved MagSafe speed of 20W. Battery capacity for iPhone 16 models has been increased overall, with hefty upgrades for the Pro and Pro Max versions, although the iPhone 16 Plus shows a decrease. With the new A18 and A18 Pro chips, built on TSMC's advanced 3nm technology, and updated battery designs, such as metal housings for better heat dissipation, Apple promises longer battery life and improved energy efficiency.
