Why do some original displays not work properly after replacement on the iPhone X and iPhone 11 models?

Have you ever experienced that after a repair, an original quality display on the iPhone X, XR, XS, or 11 does not perform correctly? This can be related to the different manufacturers of the chipsets used in these devices, such as those from Toshiba, LG, and Sharp. In this blog, we will discuss how you can find out which manufacturer’s chipsets are in the respective device. With this information, we can work together to prevent problems like the ones described above.

The different chipset manufacturers for iPhones

There are three different manufacturers that produce chipsets for various iPhone models, including the iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and iPhone 11. This diversity of manufacturers explains why some original displays do not function on one iPhone X device, while they do on another iPhone X device. This depends on the manufacturer of the chipsets. Below, you will find an overview of which manufacturers are compatible with each other.

Note! It is not clear how it is possible that an LG display sometimes works on a Toshiba device, while a Toshiba display does not always work on an LG device.

How do you identify which manufacturer the chipsets in the device are from?

There is only one way to definitively determine which manufacturer the chipsets come from. This is by looking at the flex cable; each flex cable has a QR code. By scanning this code, you can identify which manufacturer is responsible for producing the phone's chipsets, allowing you to identify the correct screen needed for repair. The difference in length between QR codes can be a clue to the manufacturer: Toshiba QR codes are longer than those of LG. See below for what these QR codes look like.

Another method that is speculated upon to determine which manufacturer the chipsets come from is based on the four or six digits inside the device. However, this method has never been confirmed.

Conclusion

Given that there are three different manufacturers producing chipsets for the iPhone X, XS, XR, and 11, not all of which are compatible with each other, it is possible that displays of original quality with those chipsets may not function properly on certain devices. Fortunately, this can be easily prevented by scanning the QR code on the flex cable of the device and purchasing the correct display that matches the corresponding chipset of the device. Therefore, make sure to carefully determine which display you need for your repair.
